Black Flag Drops Steckly from Top-5 Finish at Trois Rivieres

Scott Steckly racing ahead of Mark Dilley and Dave Whitlock in last Sunday’s Trois Rivieres Grand Prix.
After returning home from the past two CASCAR Super Series races out in Western Canada, the teams headed back out on the road to Quebec for the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres. Scott Steckly, driver of the #22 Erb Group Dodge Charger came into the race at Trois Rivieres in third place in the CASCAR Championship Standings. The race was Sunday August 6 th. The race track at Trois Rivieres is a 10-turn temporary street course. Steckly has generally performed very well on road courses and this week was no different.
During Saturday’s 30 minute qualifying session, Scott had the third fastest lap for the majority of qualifying. However, in the final few minutes Steckly was beaten by two other cars and he had to settle for the sixth starting spot for Sunday’s race.
Sunday’s race featured only one full course caution and it occurred on the first turn of the first lap. Rookie driver Kenny Habul crashed into DJ Kennington. The damage on Kennington’s car was so severe that he could not finish the race. Following that caution, the top-5 drivers including Scott broke away from the field. The 5 cars opened up a 7 second lead on the sixth place car of Mark Dilley. Steckly would remain in fifth until lap 39 of 42. That is when CASCAR officials thought they saw oil on the race track. They said it appeared to be coming from Scott’s car. He was forced to come into the pit to serve a stop and go penalty. After serving the black flag, Steckly returned to the track in sixth place, after being passed by Dilley. Following the race CASCAR inspected Scott’s Erb Group Dodge and it was proven that there was no oil leaking from the car and that CASCAR black flagged Steckly for no reason. The black flag ended up costing Steckly 4 valuable points in the championship standings. After the race Steckly said “I was upset they black flagged us with no proof we were leaking oil. We got lucky that we only lost one position and a sixth place finish isn’t too bad”.
The next race in the CASCAR Super Series is this weekend, Saturday August 12 at Mosport Raceway in Bowmanville, ON.
