Steckly Finishes With a Top-15 at Sun Valley

Scott Steckly and his Erb Group sponsored race team wrapped up their western road swing with a stop in Vernon, BC. Steckly, from Milverton was looking to put on a strong showing in the race before heading home for the final few races in the CASCAR Super Series. As was the case in the previous week’s race at Calgary, the Vernon race featured 2 full-points qualifying heats as well as a 300 lap race that went on Saturday, July 30.
Time trials for the heat races went on Friday, with Steckly posting the 18 th fastest time. That meant that Scott would start 9 th in the second heat race. The 100-lap heat race was fairly uneventful for Steckly driving the #22 Pontiac Grand Prix. Sun Valley Speedway is a tight, half-mile tri-oval, which is very hard to pass on. During the race Scott just bided his time for much of the race, staying out of trouble. He wound up finishing in ninth, the same place he started.
Steckly would start the Sun Valley 300 in 18 th. He went down a lap early in the race, but Steckly didn’t let that affect his driving as he was slowly moving up position by position. Midway through the race Scott was into the top-15 and trying to climb higher. But with some extended green-flag racing, Steckly was put down 2 more laps by race leader and eventual winner DJ Kennington. Steckly passed Mark Dilley on lap 230 and for the final 50 laps Steckly was out racing himself as he was the only car on the race track that was 3 laps down. Steckly was fairly happy with his 13 th place finish in the race, saying “after last weeks disaster of a race we were only looking to finish the race and have a decent finish and we were able to do that today”.
The CASCAR Super Series is racing at Mosport Raceway in Bowmanville, ON this weekend, August 6, 2005.
