Nelles Corner's, ON. Scott Steckly of Milverton, ON did not waste long to make it known that he was going to have a dominant car in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series this season. Steckly cruised to victory in the season opening race at Cayuga Speedway, Saturday May 24 th. After posting the fastest time in practice, Scott managed to post the fifth fastest time in qualify. The 22 Racing team is now on a two race win streak after winning the last race of the 2007 season at Kawartha Speedway. The win also represents the second time in three years the Tow Truck in a Box/ Erb Group/ Reefer Sales Dodge Avenger has won the opening race of the season. Steckly took the checkered flag at Barrie Speedway in 2006.
After starting the race in fifth place, Steckly made everybody aware that he was going to have the car to beat on this night. He began picking off one car at a time and by lap 45 Scott took the lead by passing Don Thomson Jr. The Tow Truck in a Box/ Erb Group/ Reefer Sales Dodge would only relinquish the lead for five laps when the team pitted under caution on lap 99 for two right side tires and fuel. Scott was able to quickly regain the lead from Kerry Micks, who did not pit under the previous caution. From that point on Scott was able to grow his lead on the rest of his competition. While cautions would reset the field behind Steckly, by the second turn he was always able to quickly regain the lead. While, the other drivers were left to race amongst themselves for the runner up position. Steckly would say after the race “I have never driven a car this fast, it was like a rocket after the restarts”. Following the final caution lap 171, Scott was able to refocus for the final laps of the race. The Dodge Avenger was able to hold off a hard charging Kerry Micks to win by just under a second to post his third career victory.
Following the race an elated Steckly would say “m y car was just unbelievable all night long. I have to thank my crew for the hard work they put into this car. Winning that last race last year just gave us a lot of confidence. Hopefully we’ll go on from here and win a few more”. With the win Steckly currently leads the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship standings for the first time in his career.
