Steckly Moves Down One Rung on The Podium
After a string of wins Steckly Finishes Second in Vernon
Vernon, British Columbia, Sunday July 20, 2008: Scott Steckly driving the IRL International/Tow Truck in a Box Dodge Avenger moved down one rung on the podium on Saturday night at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon. After a string of 4 wins in five races, Steckly settled for a second place finish in the A & W 300.
The race went on Sunday afternoon under what started out as sunny skies. However, the weather quickly turned to rain. Although, Scott started on the pole he was unable to lead the first lap as Kerry Micks quickly overtook #22 Dodge on the first lap to assume the race lead. Scott then settled into second behind Micks. The Tow Truck in a Box/ Erb Group car was eventually passed by two other cars, which put Scott back into fourth place. The team elected to pit on lap 20 for a rare four tire change and fuel. By the time pit stops had cycled through the team gained those two positions back, running second to Peter Gibbons. The rain began to fall on lap 41 and by lap 46 the team needed to replace their racing slick tires with grooved rain tires to better run in the rain. When pitting, Scott lost several positions, falling to ninth place. Following the last caution of the day on lap 50, Steckly was able to show his road course skills by passing five cars in two laps to move into fourth place. This is Scott’s second top-five of the season, following his win in the first race.
Steckly's Avenger practiced at the top of the charts again and after the qualifying round they would be scored fifth quickest for the start of the main event later in the evening.
The No. 22 IRL International Dodge would come down pit road during an early caution period for left side tires, fuel and chassis adjustments. Returning to the track Steckly would have to restart in eighteenth one lap down to the leaders. A caution on lap 130 gave them the free pass and they were back on the lead lap. Steckly then started working his way back to the front. A caution on lap 191 and they came back down pit road for more adjustments and right side tires setting them up for the final 100 lap run to the finish. Steckly restarted in sixth and quickly moved to the front three. On lap 224 the No. 22 car moved by D. J. Kennington for the lead a familiar scene in 2008. Don Thomson Jr. who found his way back from a lap down battled Steckly hard over the final 20 laps finally passing Steckly with less than 10 to go, giving Steckly another podium finish. "The car wasn't where we wanted it to be at the start," stated Steckly after the race. "But as usual my team came through for me and they kept adjusting on it and it was much better at the end. Don Thomson just had a little better car than we did on the final few laps and I couldn’t hold him off any longer but all in all we can't complain about a second."
Steckly now takes a 111 point lead into event six at the Edmonton Indy next weekend on the temporary road course circuit at the Edmonton Regional Airport.
Finish 1. Don Thomson Jr. 2. Scott Steckly 3. John Gaunt 4. Mark Dilley 5. D. J. Kennington.
