Spins Send Steckly to the Back at St. Eustache

St. Eustache, PQ. Scott Steckly, driver of the #22 Thermo King Dodge Charger race team headed out to Quebec for the next to last CASCAR race of this season. The race went Saturday September 9th at the Autodrome St. Eustache. During past races at the St. Eustache racetrack, Scott has been fairly successful. He posted a second place finish at the 4/10 mile oval back in 2003. This weekend however, that finish could not be repeated. The team qualified 13th out of a field of 17 cars for Saturday night’s race.

Like last weekends race, this one featured another CHAMP Car driver in the #88 machine. Andrew Ranger was in the car for St. Eustache. He showed his stock car driving inexperience several times on this night and unfortunately for Scott he was the victim on most occasions. Starting on lap 10, Ranger spun Steckly. He was able to recover and stay on the lead lap as the caution came out. A short while later, on lap 34, the rookie Ranger spun the #22 Thermo King car again. This time, Steckly had to come to the pits to fix a bent tie rod bar. The stop put the team down 20 laps. The pit crew got the car back out and Scott returned to the track to gain as many points in the Super Series Championship as possible. It was not Steckly’s night on Saturday as on lap 170 the #22 car blew its engine and had to retire from the race. There was more excitement to close out the 200 lap event. On lap 198 Don Thomson Jr. was spun out by Kerry Micks. It was the second race in a row Thomson was spun during the closing laps. Micks, was black flagged for the incident. After the race Scott jokingly said “I was looking for the Champ Car driver, but he had already taken his helmet off”. Referring to the ongoing saga between Champ Car drivers Paul Tracy and Sebastian Bourdais. Steckly also commented on the work the team needs to do to prepare for next weekends race saying “We want to end the season just like it started, with a win. We know we will have to put some long hours in at the shop to be ready for Kawartha”.

The final race of the CASCAR Super Series season goes this Sunday at Kawartha Speedway in Peterborough. The Dodge Charger 250 goes at 3:30 on Sunday.

On September 12, CASCAR announced that it had sold the rights of the racing series to NASCAR. The series has been renamed the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and will keep the same racing format for the coming season. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will operate nationally in Canada with a schedule of 10-12 races (May-October).

Go to CASCAR.ca for information on the racing series or contact kyle_erb@sympatico.ca for information about Scott Steckly and the entire race team.
