Tough Day for Steckly, in Power Water 200

Scott Steckly, (red, #22) racing in the Power Water 200 at Cayuga 2000 Speedway
Nelles Corners, ON. After posting a solid third place finish in the season opening Mopar 250 at Delaware Speedway, the Erb Group/ Thermo King/ AW Millwrights Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Scott Steckly of Milverton, Ontario, were ready to continue their hot start to the season. This week the CASCAR Super Series race was at the Cayuga 2000 Speedway for the running of the Power Water 200. Over the past few years Cayuga 2000 Speedway had not been the friendliest of tracks for the 22 race team but this week they were looking forward to putting their new Guyons Chassis to the test. Qualifying was set for Saturday June 5, with Scott placing in ninth for the start of Sunday's feature event.
The race started off fairly uneventful for the first few laps of the race, and has been the case this season so far, Steckly moved up positions from his original starting place. By the time first caution flag fell he was up into seventh place. The caution was caused when the two youngest drivers of the series Pete Shephard in the #50 car and the #84 car of J.R. Fitzpatrick got into the side of each other going down the front straight and spun into the grass. The #22 car of Scott Steckly remained in 7th position until the next caution on lap 53 when the #02 of Kerry Micks spun J.R. Fitzpatrick. The #02 spinning other cars would become an all too familiar sight on Sunday. After racing for 20 laps another caution came out and it was time for the #22 pit crew to do their work, crew chief Ken Gropp decided that the best way to get the #22 car to the front of the pack was to take 2 right side tires, and fuel. Steckly ended up restarting the race in 12th place as not all of the cars ahead of him had elected to pit at that time. Within a few laps, he had the car back into tenth place, until the #3 car of Mark Swain spun right in front of Scott and to avoid a collision Steckly had to drive the car in to the turn 4 grass. For his efforts the grille of the car ended up being covered in grass. On lap 115 the #02 of Kerry Micks drove hard into the back bumper of Steckly as the #22 car was slowing to enter turn #3, spinning Steckly in front of the pit road entrance. Scott recovered in sixteenth place, last car on the lead lap. That was only the beginning of Scott Steckly's problems on this day. With the Erb Group Grand Prix in 9th place, Scott began to feel a vibration in the car. Steckly tried to ride it out but the vibration only got worse and he was beginning to lose laps. Finally, on lap 181 of 200 Steckly was forced to bring the car in for the day as the clutch had given up. Scott and the rest of the 22 race team ended up finishing in 26th place in the race and dropped to 9th in series points with 252.
After the race Scott had this to say about his day, "It looked like we were going to have a solid top- 10 car but it just wasn't to be this week". The next race in the CASCAR Super Series is this Saturday, June 12th at Peterborough Speedway for the Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200. A place where Scott posted a career best second place finish two years ago.
