Steckly Shines under Lights at Peterborough

Steckly powering under Brad Graham at Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200
Peterborough, ON. Coming off a tough weekend at the Cayuga 2000 Speedway, Scott Steckly driver of the #22 Erb Group/ Thermo King/ AW Millwrights Grand Prix was determined to get back on the right track in the teams chase for the 2004 CASCAR Super Series Championship.
The day started with qualifying at 5:30 p.m. and the Milverton native posted another solid starting place, this time in the 11th position. Although Peterborough Speedway is a tight one- third mile race track and qualifying positions are very important Scott would prove that this night it would not really matter.
Almost immediately from the drop of the green flag Scott was moving up positions. After two laps of the Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200, Steckly had passed Jim Lapcevich in the #25 car and the #10 car driven by Doug Brown. The first of many cautions occurred on lap 63 with 5 cars all hitting each other in turn 3. Scott did not escape the mix up scratch- free as the #86 car of Kenny Forth rear- ended the Erb Group Pontiac bending the bumper just a bit. By that time Steckly had put the #22 car into 5th place, which is where he would remain for much of the race. The drivers settled in for a while, going some 30 laps before the caution flag fell, this time for a spin in turn 2. At that time the Erb Group Grand Prix was still going strong in 5th place. But after going green for another 30 laps Steckly’s tires began to wear a little and he was slowly falling off the pace of the leaders. Again the caution flag came out at a perfect time as the #71 of Brian Cathcart spun in turn 3. It was then time for the Erb Group pit crew to do their work. Crew Chief Ken Gropp decided that the car needed two right side tires, a decision that would turn out positive in the end. On lap 141, Steckly restarted the race in 7th position behind the #19 car driven by Brad Graham. For the next 20 laps Steckly was all over the rear bumper of the #19 of Brad Graham, and Graham feeling the pressure, he drove deep into turn 2 and spun out the #32 of Mike Alguire, causing another yellow caution flag. On the restart Scott followed the #02 of Kerry Micks as they both passed the #4 car of Don Thomson pushing a Thomson all the way back to 5th place. Micks began to drive away from Scott, as the lapped car of Ron Beauchamp Jr. thought he was racing Scott for position. With only a few laps remaining and Steckly unable to get by Beauchamp he gave him a little nudge and with that he was then able to get by Beauchamp Jr. in turn 4. Scott was not able to catch up to Micks and so Steckly finished the race in fourth place. After the race Steckly had this to say “We had an excellent car tonight and had we not been blocked at that end there, we might have had another podium finish. But so far this season we’ve had two top five finishes in three races and that is just about all we could have ask for entering this season.
