Scott Steckly and his Metro International Toronto/ Erb Group sponsored #22 Pontiac Grand Prix returned home from their 2-week trip out west to Calgary, AB and Vernon, BC for a race at Mosport Raceway in Bowmanville this past weekend. Steckly has consistently qualified in the top-15 all season. Too many times this year he has then been forced to go to the back of the field after qualifying and did so again this weekend. After posting a strong 9 th place qualify effort, the 22 Racing team found that clutch seal was leaking and had to fix the problem. Because the team made changes to the car after qualifying they had to start at the rear of the 20 car field.
The team was able to make all of their repairs in time for the race, which started at 7 PM, on August 6 th. Steckly was able to pickup several positions in the opening laps and by the first caution Steckly had the Metro International/ Erb Group Pontiac into 13 th place. The pit crew decided to pit off-sequence compared to the rest of the field, so they took 2 right side tires, fuel and made a wedge adjustment. The pit stop left the Steckly as the last car on the lead lap, in 15 th place. The move to pit early worked wonders for the team as when the caution came out at lap 100, the rest of the leaders had to pit for tires and fuel. Because of this Steckly was able to restart the race in 2 nd place. It would not last long as the cars with newer tires where able to power past Scott. He would remain in the top-10 until another caution on lap 155, when the team pitted again for another right rear tire. This put the team in 14 th place. Now it was Scott’s turn to pass cars because he had newer tires compared to his competition. In the remaining laps he passed 3 cars getting into 11 th position. The same place her stands in the championship standings. Scott saw this race as a good confidence booster saying “it’s been a while since we finished on the lead lap; with the bad luck we’ve had this season we are happy with the result”.
Next week the CASCAR Super Series is at Cayuga Speedway in Nelles Corners, ON. A place where Scott has traditionally struggled at. But with the way the season has been going for Scott, you really ever know what will happen.
In the drive for the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Championship, of which Scott presently sits in 11 th place, the 22 Race team is proudly sponsored by: The Erb Group of Companies, International Truck and Engine Dealers: ALTRUCK, Lewis and Metro; Thermo King of Eastern Canada, CPL Systems, AW Millwrights, Chris Root Precision Machine, D.H.
