Komoka, ON. A week after the CASCAR Super Series Mopar 250 at Delaware Speedway was supposed to get underway; it finally did on Saturday May 29. The Erb Group/ AW Millwrights/ Thermo King Grand Prix, driven by Milverton native Scott Steckly, qualified in eighth for the season opening race.
Early on in the race Steckly made it clear he was heading to the front of the field. Eleven laps into the race he was already up two positions into sixth place. After the third caution of the race on lap 42, the race went green until lap 97 when Mark Swain of the #3 smacked into the inside wall near the start/ finish line. At that time crew chief Ken Gropp decided it was time for the 22 race team to make their first and only pit stop. The Erb Group Grand Prix stood in eighth when they went in for the pit stop and came out in 12th position when the green flag racing resumed. Only 28 laps later Steckly had the 22 machine all the way up into 4th place and that would be the lowest position the car would be for the remainder of the race. Once again race went a long stretch without a caution until the #25 car of Jim Lapcevich spun in turn 2. Many of the lead lap contenders chose to pit but, Steckly and his crew decided to stay out and keep the excellent track position that they had established to this point in the race. In the final 25 laps there would be 4 more cautions. With Scott Steckly in 4th place for many laps, he finally made a pass on Steve Robblee in the #28 car; he had been the leader for much of the race. Following another caution on lap 236, the top three cars started to drive away as the #1 of Peter Gibbons, #23 of Jeff Lapcevich, and Steckly took a commanding leading on the rest of the field, that was until another yellow flag fell, this time for debris on the track. On the restart the fourth place car of #39 Dave Whitlock, got off to a very quick start, gave Steckly a run for the final position on the podium and the two battled all the way to the end, where the 22 race team ended up finishing ahead on Whitlock in third place. Said Steckly after the race was over "We could have had a chance to catch the 1 (Gibbons) and the 23 (Jeff Lapcevich) had there been a few more laps in the race, but we finished in third and that is a good way to start the year anyway".
In the drive for the 2004 CASCAR Super Series Championship, Scott Steckly and 22 Racing are supported by: The Erb Group of Companies, Thermo King of Eastern Canada, AW Millwrights, Jutzi Fuels, CPL Systems, Mr. Transmission (Guelph), Commercial Babcock, TB Woods, Stratford Motor Products, Classy Collectables, PCL Graphics, Duplicolour, Guyons Performance, Filtakleen, and Holloway Automotive.
