Steckly Wins Final NASCAR Race of Season at Kawartha

The #22 Toronto Marlies Dodge Charger prior to the race at Kawartha Speedway on September 23rd. Driver Scott Steckly went on to win his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race of the season.
Fraserville, ON. Scott Steckly driver of the #22 Toronto Marlies/ Erb Group Dodge Charger was robbed of a win earlier this season on a green- white- checkered restart at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, BC. However, on Sunday, September 23rd at Kawartha Speedway he was not going to let it happen to him again. Steckly came into the race weekend in 11th place in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series standings. Coming into the race he knew a good finish would help him get the Toronto Marlies Dodge into the top-ten in the final championship standings. By winning the race he was able to secure 10th place in the standings passing #39 of Dave Whitlock. Steckly had a fast car in qualifying, putting his car in the sixth starting position. The Toronto Marlies Dodge was the most popular car during the autograph session. Accompanying was Scott was broadcaster and former Toronto Maple Leaf Bob McGill, along with the Toronto Marlies mascot Duke the Dog.
Early on in the race Steckly was able to stay in sixth place. An incident with #11 of Ron Van Es caused some damage to the right front quarter panel, but it did not slow him down at all. Off a restart on lap 61, Scott got caught on the outside lane and lost two positions dropping to eighth place. This would be one of the few times another driver would be able to pass Steckly on this night. The team made a pit stop for two tires, fuel, and a wedge adjustment under caution on lap 104. From that point on Steckly knew he had the car to beat. Steckly was able to drive his Toronto Marlies Dodge around the outside of five cars during the next green flag run. When a the caution flag fell on lap 157, Scott was in fourth place, and the only cars that were ahead of him had not yet made their scheduled pit stop. As the rest of the leaders pitted it handed the lead over to Steckly.
The Toronto Marlies Dodge would lead for the next 18 laps, until a hard charging #4 of Don Thomson Jr. was able to pass the #22 machine. When another caution fell on lap 226, it allowed Steckly to restart on the outside of the front row beside Thomson Jr. When the green flag dropped to resume racing, Scott was able to gain the lead back, however entering turn one Thomson aggressively drove into the corner and ran Steckly up the race track and back into second place. A short while later on another restart, Steckly was able to pass Thomson using a similar move. The Toronto Marlies Charger drove away from the rest of the field. When a caution came out with one lap to go it set up a green- white- checkered finish between Steckly and Peter Gibbons in the #1 car. On this night, no other car would have enough for Steckly. Scott was able to beat Gibbons by .341 seconds for his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series victory.
Steckly had thoughts of what happened in Vernon, BC in the back of his mind when another green- white- checkered came out. He said “I thought about it when the caution came out, I said to myself oh no, not again. “I was not about to let it happen again”. Scott went on to say “we’ve had out share of bad things this year, but this win takes a great portion of that away. This momentum will carry us through the off-season and right into next year.”
