Steckly Ends Year with Fourth Place Finish at Kawartha

Scott Steckly, racing DJ Kennington for the lead in the Dodge Charger 250 on lap 71. Steckly was unable to get by Kennington before the caution flag fell.
Peterborough, ON. Scott Steckly headed into the final CASCAR Super Series races sitting in seventh place in the overall Championship Standings. The final race took place at Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough. Steckly was looking to have a strong finish to the year and hopefully gain a position or two in the point’s standings. The Erb Group Dodge qualified as the fourth fastest car in the Dodge Charger 250 presented by Mopar. The race went on Sunday, September 17.
Steckly quickly put his Dodge horsepower to work after the drop of the green flag. The Erb Group Charger passed eventual race winner Mark Dilley on the outside for third place on lap 15. Scott then passed the eventual Super Series Championship winner JR Fitzpatrick for second place. Steckly then set his sights on race leader DJ Kennington for the lead. The two drivers battled for 8 laps, in some very intense side by side racing. Steckly was unable to get by Kennington, when the caution flew for a blown motor on Ron Beauchamp’s car. During the second caution flag of the day, the team made a pit stop to change two right side tires. The stop dropped him down to seventh place, but after the racing resumed Scott quickly got back into the top-5. Fifth position is where Steckly would remain until the next caution on lap 165. During that caution the team changed all four tires. CASCAR rules state that a team can not change more than two tires per pit stop. So Scott had to make two trips to the pits to complete his 4 tire stop. This dropped the #22 Erb Group car down to ninth place, but he had 4 new tires for the end of the race. Lap 205, he passed Brad Graham for eight and 5 laps later Scott got by JR Fitzpatrick for 7th. As has been the case with the last few CASCAR races there was plenty of excitement in the closing laps of the Dodge Charger 250. Scott moved into sixth, following a Dave Whitlock spin on lap 248 which brought out the caution flag. This set up a 2 lap fight to the finish. When the green flag dropped to resume the racing, Kerry Micks and Peter Gibbons got into each other causing another spin; this moved Steckly up into the fourth position.
Scott was very impressed with his Dodge Charger at Kawartha saying “we had a strong car all day. It was a great finish up the year and the final CASCAR race on a positive note. I would also like to thank all of our sponsors, who were able to share this excellent year with us”. Scott finished the season in sixth place in the overall CASCAR Championship points standings. This is his highest finish in the standings to date. The CASCAR Super Series will resume next year under ownership from NASCAR. The series will be called the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
