Coming off a strong 8 th place finish at Barrie Speedway last week, Scott Steckly of Milverton, ON was looking to continue to his climb up the CASCAR Super Series standings at the Toronto Molson Indy on July 10 th. The weekend started with Scott Steckly appearing at Metro International Toronto for a appreciation barbeque, which was a big success. Metro Toronto was the sponsoring International dealer for the Molson Indy race. Time trials for the 36 lap race were on Saturday and the Erb Group/ Metro Toronto #22 Pontiac Grand Prix posted the 14 th fastest time. During the practice sessions the team discovered that the engine had a miss in it, however during that proved to be a non-factor for the 22 Racing team on race day.
The CASCAR race was set for after the Champ Car race on Sunday and the all of the CASCAR drivers were out to show the fans what stock car racing was all about. There were two cautions early on in the ATTO 100, but after that it was green flag racing until the end. Through the first laps of the race Scott was racing in the top-15. Halfway through the race though Steckly was picking off positions at a rate of almost one per lap, which is tough to do on the narrow street circuit in Toronto. By lap 25, the Erb Group/ Metro Toronto Pontiac were up into 6 th place and battling with Mark Dilley and Brad Graham to move up even higher. While battling with Dilley and Graham, Steckly locked up his brakes at the end of Lakeshore Blvd. and ended up tagging both the inside and outside walls before coming to a stop. Steckly recovered and only lost 2 positions, falling to 8 th. For the remaining laps of the race Scott was just focused on having an incident-free final few laps, which he was able to do in finishing in eighth. That was his second consecutive top-10, after starting the season off very poorly. After the race Scott said he “had an excellent car capable of running with race winner Kerry Micks”. He also said “it was unfortunate that I spun the car, as it ruined any chances of our first top-5 of the year”.
The CASCAR Super Series shifts to out west for the next two races. As Race City Motorsports Park in Calgary and Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, BC are the homes of the next two races.
In the drive for the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Championship, of which Scott presently sits in 15 th place, the 22 Race team is proudly sponsored by: The Erb Group of Companies, International Truck and Engine Dealers: ALTRUCK, Lewis and Metro; Thermo King of Eastern Canada, CPL Systems, AW Millwrights, Chris Root Precision Machine, D.H.
