Steckly Unable to Survive “The Big One” at Delaware

The Erb Group car received heavy front end damage
after being involved in “the big one”.
Scott Steckly driver of the #22 Erb Group/ International Truck and Engine Pontiac Grand Prix returned to Delaware Speedway for the third last race of the year. Scott has traditionally done very well at the London area speedway, however in the first race of the year at Delaware Scott suffered a setback finishing 28 th after suffering electrical problems. Coming off his first top-5 of the year at Peterborough, Steckly was looking to have another strong finish this past weekend.
Scott was the twelfth fastest driver in qualifying for Sunday’s APC Great Canadian Race, a 300 lap event. During the opening laps of the race Steckly was passed early by Peter Gibbons, but Scott quickly settled in and he remained 13th until lap 60. Steckly moved the Erb Group Pontiac into the top-10 following a caution on lap 78. The first pit stop for the Erb team was during a caution on lap 106 when they changed the left rear tire. Following the pit stop the team restarted in 17 th place, because not all teams decided to make a pit stop during that caution. After the rest of the field pitted on lap 120 Scott moved up to 3rd place. He would remain in third behind D.J. Kennington and Brad Graham until a caution on lap 187 when the team pitted to change the two right side tires and added fuel to the car. That stop put him into 11 th but he moved up a few positions to ninth a few laps later. The race featured 17 cautions and “the big one” came on lap 233 when #23 Jim Lapcevich spun out rookie driver #37 Tara McLeod which caused a chain reaction crash of many the of cars behind. In total 7 cars were involved in the wreck, including Scott. The crash severely damaged the front end of the car and the radiator. The race had to be red flagged for several minutes while cars were towed into the infield. The Erb Group pit crew managed to change the cars radiator and only lose one lap. However, their efforts went for not after returning to the track for one lap until the rear end broke and the team was forced to park the car, finishing in 21 st place. Scott was disappointed following the race saying “our pit strategy was working perfectly with our 2 new right tires we were ready to make the late charge to the podium. Unfortunately, when you pit out of sequence with the leaders you end up running with the lapped traffic and rookies until you can clear them. We had a good car today, now we have lots of work to get ready for Cayuga next week.”
Next week the CASCAR Super Series goes to Cayuga for the rescheduled race, which was originally scheduled for last month.
In the drive for the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Championship, of which Scott presently sits in 11 th place, the 22 Race team is proudly sponsored by: The Erb Group of Companies, International Truck and Engine Dealers: ALTRUCK, Lewis and Metro; Thermo King of Eastern Canada, CPL Systems, AW Millwrights, Chris Root Precision Machine, D.H.
