Steckly Slammed out of Top - Five Run

Scott Steckly racing with Mark Dilley in Saturday’s Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200 at Cayuga Speedway.

Hamilton, ON. The first ever NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race took the green flag Saturday at Cayuga Speedway. Scott Steckly, driver of the #22 Erb Group Dodge Charger hoped to continue what was started last year by setting more career bests this season. Steckly qualified in the fifth position. That was a strong qualifying run, considering Cayuga has been one of the tracks he struggles at the most. Running near the front for most of the race, Saturday would end up similar to most other Cayuga races, after Ron Beauchamp Jr. aggressively slammed Steckly into the outside wall on the front stretch.

The new season brought some new changes to the series. The most noticeable being, restarts are now always double file, as opposed to lapped cars being on the inside line. Another change is the first car a lap or more down gains the ‘lucky dog’ position. This allows the driver to gain one of his laps back. There were numerous cautions during Saturday’s event, including two in the first nine laps of the race. Steckly was unable to pass a slower car of Dave Whitlock off a restart and was then passed by Ron Beauchamp and Kerry Micks. This putted Scott down to seventh place. On the next restart, Steckly got those positions back by passing Ron Van Es and Kerry Micks. Steckly got pushed up the track by Van Es on lap 71 and this dropped Scott down to 11th place, after a few cars got by him on the inside line. A short while later the team pitted under caution for right side tires and fuel. The Erb Group Dodge came out in 12th place.

On the next restart Dave Whitlock’s car was slow and Scott was unable to get out of the way. Scott rear ended Whitlock causing some front end damage to the Erb Group Charger. By lap 97 Steckly worked his way into eighth place. On lap 99 Steckly had to dive to the inside of turn two to avoid a major collision between Van Es and Micks. The team decided to pit under caution to change left side tires and fix the damage on the #22 machine. As the race went on Steckly’s car was getting stronger and stronger. By lap 170 he had passed JR Fitzpatrick and #27 of Andrew Ranger to move into fourth place. Steckly continued his charge to the front by passing Peter Gibbons on lap 182. Off a restart on lap 193, Steckly and Beauchamp were battling side by side for third place. Beauchamp began inching Steckly closer to the outside wall. As the two cars past the start-finish line Beauchamp slammed Steckly’s car into the wall. There was significant damage to both cars. Steckly got into a heated argument with Beauchamp on the race track. The race had to be red flagged as the tow trucks removed the mangled cars from the track.

Scott was very frustrated after the race. He said “I had a faster race car than him and was just about to get by him, rather than letting me get by cleanly, he angled me off into the wall. We both had top-five cars tonight; instead we end up with a badly damaged car.” He continued by saying “the Dodge was really running well for us, we were getting better and better. It’s just too bad”. Steckly wound up finishing in 12th but was left thinking about what could have been, had some smarter driving taken place on the track.
