Scott Steckly 2006 Year in Review

The 22 Racing team celebrating after driver Scott Steckly’s first career CASCAR Super Series win at Barrie Speedway.

Scott Steckly had his most successful season in the CASCAR Super Series to date. Steckly’s year featured his first career win in the Super Series, six top-5 finishes and a career best sixth place finish in the CASCAR Championship standings. This was the first year for Scott driving a Dodge Charger, finally making the switch over as many other drivers had done in the previous few years. Here is a race-by-race recap of Scott’s racing season:

May 22, Barrie Speedway After starting the race in 10 th position, Steckly quickly rocketed to the front. The team made an early pit stop and never looked back. Scott opened up a five second over the entire field. In the closing laps Steckly, held of Mark Dilley and Don Thomson Jr. on route to his first CASCAR win.

June 18, Mosport Raceway Steckly continued his hot first to the season with a third place finish at the Mosport road course. The Erb Group driver was able to bide his time sitting in seventh place for much of the race. When three cars spun off the track, Scott was able to move into third.

July 2, Barrie Speedway The teams returned to Barrie Speedway for the second time in three races. Steckly qualified in sixth for the race; however he encountered a bit of trouble during the race. On lap 42, the #22 Dodge Charger had a flat tire. That caused Scott to lose one lap to the leader. Like the first race at Barrie, Steckly had the best car in the race. Scott passed leader Don Thomson to regain his lap back. Steckly was one of the few cars able to pass Thomson on this day. Following a couple of crashes late in the race, Steckly worked his way up to a fifth place finish.

July 16, Sun Valley Speedway The Super Series went out to the west for the first of two races this year. Scott posted first top-5 starting position of the year in Vernon, BC. Following a pit stop which dropped Scott down to 13 th place, Steckly was forced to work his way up from the back. He quickly did that, and with 30 laps remaining he was battling Kerry Micks for fifth. Steckly successfully made the pass on Micks and went on to finish the race in fourth. It was the fourth top-5 finish in four races to start the season.

July 23, Grand Prix of Edmonton Steckly started the second road course race in seventh place. But, on lap 4 Scott was involved in a big spin, causing the #22 car to drop all the way to the back of the 37 car field. Over the last 25 laps, Steckly passed 25 cars and ended up finishing in twelfth place.

August 6, Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres Scott had a very strong car at Trois Rivieres. He passed DJ Kennington early on in the race for fifth place. After that, the top-5 cars broke away from the field opening up a 7 second lead on the sixth place car. With 3 laps remaining, CASCAR thought they saw oil coming from Steckly’s car. They black flagged him causing Scott to lose one position. It was proven later on that there was no oil leaking and he was black flagged for no reason.

August 12, Mosport Speedway The Erb Group car stayed in the top-10 for much of the first half of the race. Following pit stop on lap 69, Steckly moved into fifth place. That standing was not going to last, as a broken pan hard bar put Scott five laps down. The team recovered to finish 17 th.

August 26, Grand Prix of Montreal Steckly had a relatively easy race in Montreal. Scott started the race in third and finished third. Scott and leaders Robin Buck and Kerry Micks broke away from everybody. The three cars were 19 seconds ahead, easily cruising to the finish line.

September 3, Cayuga Speedway Scott had another top-10 car on this day. The team elected to stay out during the first few cautions for some additional field position. After pitting during the midpoint of the race, Scott dropped down to 11 th. He passed two cars and was able to finish in 9 th place.

September 9, Autodrome St. Eustache Steckly struggled all weekend at St. Eustache. He qualified for the race in 13 th. During the race, Scott was spun twice by Champ Car driver Andrew Ranger. After getting spun the second time by Ranger the car had a broken tie rod bar. This put the team 20 laps down. The trouble did not end there for Steckly as with 30 laps left the cars engine blew. Steckly finished the race in sixteenth place.

September 17, Kawartha Speedway Scott had one of the strongest cars again on this day. He qualified fourth, but quickly found himself in a battle for the lead with DJ Kennington. The battle went on for several laps, but eventually Scott settled back into second place. Pit stops put Steckly down into seventh. He gained a few positions later in the race as some of the cars ahead of Scott spun out, this moved him into fourth in the final Super Series race of the season.
